Shots from the 2001 Block Island Race Week -- Racing

The first three photos where taken by Bob Swirbalus (owner of PHENIX and tactician aboard RIGADOON). The rest were taken by Meggi Johnstone aboard the photo boat driven by her father Jeff. Jeff was busy steering and shooting video. Click on the thumbnails for an enlarged view.
That's KIMA going downhill with CYAN in the background. Given that Bob took this shot, I guess we were ahead of at least one boat at this point in the race. There are about 11 boats visible in the downwind shot. Judging from the spread, it must be near the end of the race. Some of the boats in the background appear to have finished. WET LEOPARD is in the middle with the other boats staying well clear.
Don Priestly's crew on WET PAINT has the chute up and drawing. This was about as much as we saw of whitecaps during the week. These three photos probably were taken on Thursday. Bryan Dougherty's REVELATION going upwind in Monday's only race, finishing fourth. On Thursday, they hit paydirt with a 3-1 for daily honors.
Andy Skibo's PLUM CRAZY was one of two boats sailing with two sons aboard (Nick and Jedd). The other was KIMA (Mark and Garth Weiderman). RIGADOON and ALL RIGHT also had father/son crews. From right to left it's PFM2, ECLIPSE, FLAME, and WET LEOPARD coming downwind. Note in the light conditions how the chutes are pegged at the mast and the bowsprit as the boats reach down the course.
Brian Tedeschi was a Block Island winner in 1997 on a friend's boat. He returned in 2001 with two partners aboard IT WASN'T ME. Several boats sported the new and distinctive gray Sharkskin North mains.

Billy Baldwin's crew prepares for a spin set at the weather mark on Monday. That top flag is the class flag, but what is that red one below it?
