One of the first things you see when you step off the Block Island Ferry is the Narragansett Inn at Old Harbor. On the way out to the racecourse from New Harbor, you pass through a narrow cut with a small beach. Slow going here. The Coast Guard station is right there if you get into trouble.
Some of the big boats have been known to go aground through here at low tide, creating traffic jams worthy of Manhattan. What is a Block Island album without a beach picture. That little fellow is the first and only grandchild of the owner of KIMA.
Here's Blue Yankee on her way back in on Friday. The big boats were on a different circle, but the 105s got to watch them speed by on Friday's Round the Island Race. The looks like the aftermath of one of the many general recalls on Monday. The RC was very reluctant to put out the "I" or "Z" flags for the fleet.
The fleet lines up for a start on Monday. If you were in the second row it was as if a curtain came down and it took forever to get back to the line. Ask John Eielson. KIMA going upwind. That main is way too far below centerline for the conditiions. Are we really racing here?
Bob Leaver's HEADHUNTER is about to round the weather mark behind ELCIPSE. HEADHUNTER got out to a fast start and was in first place after Wednesday's racing. Ralph Kinder looks for daylight between CAT (right) and WET PAINT (center) as Janna Young looks to keep the spinnaker from shrimping. MASQUERADE calmly rounds the starboard gate while the others sort it out.
