Larchmont Race Week - Week 2The second weekend at Larchmont started with a perfect Saturday for sailing, with shifty Northerlies strong enough to get three races in. One of the highlights of the day was the tacking duel between Tern and Kincsem on the final windward leg of the final race. Kincsem earned a four boat length lead on the second windward leg and held it around the leeward mark. Tern rounded and attacked immediately with a series of tacks matched by Kincsem that drove the two boats to the right side of the course, with Tern gaining ground. The two boats started a drag race to the left side to cover Last Tango, who was rapidly closing. Tern managed to get its bow out on Kincsem and crossed on a late left shift for its third bullet of the day.
The final day of racing was the type of day we all fear at Larchmont in July - light and variable. Yankee Doodle went hard right in the first race, rounded first and avoided the holes better than anyone to take the bullet. One of her bigger challenges was avoiding three big boats coming in on starboard tack at the finish --boats with low PHRF ratings, who started five minutes ahead!
The Race Committee debated and postponed for about an hour before starting the last race in patchy light air. They did and mercifully shortened it to only three legs. It could have been anyone's race. Winged Victory, after doing a 720 at the start, went hard left and was first to the windward and leeward marks. That same bet, hard left, cost them three boats on the final leg. Tern went hard right on the last leg, found the pressure first and came back to engage Last Tango in the final tacking duel of the series. The two boats crossed just ahead of Yankee Doodle, who posted an impressive 1-3 for the day.
Tern finished the weekend with four bullets, taking first place in the J/105 fleet and winning the Charles Vanderlaan Trophy, awarded to the boat which "in the judgment of the Regatta Committee and the Commodore of the Larchmont Yacht Club has made the best performance" in the 52 boat Cruising Division.
Larchmont Race Week - Week 1
Trivia Question: How do you break a tie when two boats have the same number of firsts, seconds and thirds? "It will be broken in favour of the boat with the best score in the last race in which the tied boats raced" (RRS A2.3). That's how close the competition was at the first weekend of Larchmont Race Week. The top three boats ended up within one point, with Tern barely squeaking out a win over Revelation on the tiebreaker. The two boats ended the weekend just a single point ahead of Kincsem.
The first day of racing couldn't be described as a typical July day at Larchmont, with winds ranging from 15 to just under 35 knots. Joerg Esdorn and the impeccable crew work of Kincsem looked unbeatable with two bullets on Saturday. The first race gave an indication of winds to come with gusts well into the 20 knot range. Kincsem led from start to finish. Revelation and Tern traded positions in a tightly contested battle for second with Revelation passing Tern on the final leeward leg.
The second race was a test of survival skills as winds kicked up to nearly 35 knots. Tern led until the first leeward mark, then had trouble dousing the kite. Kinsem passed and never looked back, sailing flatter and faster than anyone. The rest of the fleet spread out as all boats did their best to handle the strong gusts. Boatspeeds in the teens were the norm on the leeward legs. Kudos to John Sutherland and the crew of "She's the Boss" for hanging in there for both races on their first race day. What a way to start!
The second day was a reminder of the old Butch Cassidy movie - "Who are those guys?" It was Last Tango rounding the first windward mark in the lead with good boatspeed after banging the left hard in light, fluky winds. The day was a good test for tacticians with light winds and developing sea breezes complicated by a between-race tide change. Kincsem, Tern, Last Tango and Revelation were all close at the first leeward mark. Revelation rounded fourth, went hard right and won the race. Last Tango, hoping for the same success to the left, banged it hard again and ended up fourth. Typical of light air races, the corners were the place to be - but which corner?
The final race was sailed in about 8 knots of a developing sea breeze on an ebb tide. The fleet was well spread out across the line with Tern and Winged Victory on the pin end, banging the left side of the course. They rounded the first two marks 1-2 and held off the rest of the fleet until the second windward mark, where Revelation caught Winged Victory on a left shift just before the mark. Last Tango and Kincsem each managed move up a place with well-timed gybes on the final leeward leg.

Congratulations to Joerg Esdorn for winning his first Fleet #6 regatta with his new boat with a solid 2-2-1! His experience sailing Vanguard 15's was put to good use on the J/105. Both of Saturday's races were sailed in a steady 10-12 knot breeze. In the first race, the RC posted a two leg windward-leeward course, even though they meant to post a two LAP course. So when Damian crossed the line after one lap, well ahead of the fleet and broke out the sandwiches, they soon realized that the lack of a gun was a sure sign that the RC had screwed up. They put the sandwiches away, recrossed the line and took the pin to port and proceeded to win the race anyway. It was not so easy for KINCSEM, ODYSSEY, and WET PAINT who finished the posted race, but were hotly pursued by the remainder of the fleet. They all had to cross the rest of the fleet to make a "proper rounding" of the leeward mark. When all was said and done, these three asked for, and received, redress from the protest committee. That's why there are two 2nds and two 4ths in the results above. The RC further distinguished themselves by keeping the same weather mark in the second race even though the breeze shifted from 60 degrees to 90 degrees. This had little effect on the top two however, as Damian and Joerg were 1-2 for the second time.Sunday's conditions were more challenging and even a quarter mile lead in the middle of the fleet seemed meaningless and could evaporate on a single leg. Windspeeds varied from 5 to 20 knots and the direction was all over the place. If you were in the wrong place at the wrong time, half the fleet could go by you. The RC posted a five legger and this time they really meant it. The laylines were so variable that one minute you could be overstood by ten boatlengths and the next minute you would have to tack to make the mark. The top three figured it out, however, and kept extending their lead over the rest of the fleet. Joerg was always in the right place at the right time and Jim Sorensen and Dimitri Spentzos were not far behind most of the time. It was a long, challenging race!

The LIS J/105 fleet opened it's season with two beautiful days on the waters of western Long Island Sound at the American Yacht Club Spring Series. This weekend's racing was the first of four consecutive regattas which will determine the fleet qualifiers for the North American Championships to be held in September in Annapolis. Skies were partly cloudy, but sunny enough to punish those forgetting their sun block. One the first day the moderate easterly breezes provided one good race and then died. After two hours waiting, the RC cancelled the second race. On Sunday the winds kicked up to about 20 knots and switched around to the North where they remained highly variable and course changes were the order of the day.On day one, Damian Emery started where he left off last season with ECLIPSE taking a bullet in race one. Dimitrios Spentzos finished second in ODYSSEY, with newcomer John Hourihan placing third in PFM2. On day two, the big story was the Fleet Captain of Fleet #14, who christened the new WET PAINT with two bullets. Even with his weight down to a diminutive 275, Don Priestly managed to hold his boat down in the blustery conditions and played the shifts to perfection. Damian managed a respectable 2-3 for the day for the lead in the regatta after the first weekend. Damian overcame the adversity of one bad start in which he started late after barging and another bad start after he was called OCS. In both instances he clawed his way back to finish near the top. Also performing well were newcomers John Esdorn in KINCEM and Brendan Kelly in FLOOZIE.
In the second race on Sunday, the top five boats finished within ten seconds and the top seven finished within thirteen seconds. Can one design racing get any closer than this? It's hard to imagine how.
The second weekend saw two days of temps in the 90's. On Saturday there was little wind and the course was shortened to three 1.25 mile legs. Damian Emery loves the light stuff and prevailed for the win over newcomer Brian Dougherty in the boat newly from Chicago called REVELATION. On Sunday the were calling for winds out of the southwest at 15 knots building to 20 by late afternoon. After another delay, the breeze filled in at closer to 5 knots for the first race which was another three legger. Competitors found that they could be sailing 50 yards apart in totally different breeze lines. David Greenhouse figured it out the best in his new SKIPPERDEE and got the win with second going to Dougherty again.
