New
Harbor was remarkably uncrowded during BIRW 2002. There were 28 J/105s
and only 73 with all the PHRF boats. |
|
WITCH
travelled the furthest distance to get to the regatta. Ken Colburn brought
her from Boothbay Harbor, Maine.
|
|
About
half the boats stayed at Block Island Boat Basin, on the north dock. |
Roll 10 - 33 |
Here
is The Oar and alongside was "the tent" where the registration,
and social activities were held and regatta gear was for sale.
|
|
This
was the view from Joerg Esdorn's cottage as the party got underway on
Monday night. |
|
The
WETs, PAINT and LEOPARD were never far apart, either at the party or on
the race course or in the standings. Don Priestly and Jim Sorenson discuss
the day's results. |
|
The
Bermudians, Buddy Rego and Bill Riker (back to camera) grill trimmer Larry
Lombardo for local knowledge. |
|
Jim
Brigger (center, leaning over) was the chief organizer of the party and
snagged two grills from other cottages. The menu was burgers and chicken. |
|
The
beer, the beer, our J/105s for a beer! The CYAN van rolled in at 1909
hours to the delight of the assembled masses. |
|
Kids
and grandkids were part of the party too. |
|
This
was the start of the informal owners meeting on Wednesday before the Around-the-Island
Race. |
|
Owner
Bob Johnstone, center, sent TERN 7 to Chicago and was beating the pants
off the boats in PHRF B sailing his J/120 Gannet. He'd rather be sailing
one-design. |
|
The
pickup parade begins and there were a few anxious owners when the wind
started to fill in. It took awhile to unload 18 owners and some crews
weren't sure if they wanted the owners back. |
|
Don
P makes the stretch to board PAINT. |
|
Thursday
saw quite a bit of waiting even after they postponed the harbor start
from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. One race was sailed. |
|
Three
generations of McLeans sailed aboard ALL RIGHT, back for its seventh Block
Island. Top row: John Palazzi, Hugh McLean, Al Boehm.
Bottom row: Amy McLean, Ben McLean, Ken McLean |

For
a guy who rarely drinks more than club soda or water, this guy can have
a hell of a lot of fun. |
|
Owners
Andy Gillis and Pam Morris and crew are always looking for ways to make
JATO go faster. Here they pump Larry Lombardo (hidden) for trimming tips.
Jim Hennegan Sr.(red hat) proved that you can do foredeck even when you
reach sixty. |
|
By
my count, at least five of the owners had physical handicaps of one kind
or another. Carl Ollson, a new owner, didn't let it bother him as he managed
a strong finish, moving from seventh to second position on the final day.
Ted Zuse was making the presentations. |
|
At
the end of the day, it was Joerg Esdorn and KINCSEM taking home the gallon
of Mount Gay.
With him are Ben Bertin from England (master of jibes and odd tasks) and
Darren Goldman
from NYC (mast). The winner's trophy will be engraved and mailed to them
later. (Joerg, you can shave now.) |
