This page will be used mainly for "National" stature regattas, e.g. regattas that might draw boats from outside the local fleets. This would include, for example, Key West RW, SORC, Charleston RW, the NOOD regattas, SF Big Boats, et al. I'll gladly consider exceptions of note, however.

The scoring in this year's Southern Circuit was the top 10 races in the three Regattas. Tom Coates' MASQUERADE garnered first place with 24 point, nine ahead of his nearest competitor, Don Wilson's CONVEXITY. In the table above, the ten best races for each qualifier are ordered from best to worst. The regattas the races are from are color coded. Twenty one boats qualified for the Southern Circuit (vs. 13 last year), with three boats sailing all three regattas. Per the Deed of Gift, Don Wilson, wins the Sportsmanship Award as the "participant who sails in all three regattas and who is deemed to promote sportsmanship and the best interests of the Class." His name, along with the winner and the 2005 President, Tom Carruthers, will be engraved on the President's Southern Circuit Trophy and presented to the winner for the year.

March 11, 2005 -A building southerly breeze matched the momentum of Acura Miami Race Week today when 12 classes vied for top positions over three courses from Biscayne Bay to the Gulf Stream. The J/105 fleet wrapped up their first day with three races with Thomas Coates of Newport, R.I. leading by one point.

March 12, 2005 - A late afternoon sea breeze settled the playing field on day three of Acura Miami Race Week where teams are protecting close leads as they go into their final day of racing. "This is my first year in the J/105 fleet and we now recognize the top boats," commented Jim Flanagan of Marblehead who is racing on "Achiever V." "But, this is a great regatta and the race committee did an amazing job with the conditions today. We thought the wind would never fill in but they were patient and once it came in it was a beautiful second race."

March 13, 2005 – Sparkling south Florida waters and varied conditions over four days proved that tactical, smart sailing made the difference in a suspenseful finish to Acura Miami Race Week today. Down-to-the-wire racing was among the highlights of a regatta that is a true renaissance event with 142 plus boats and 1200 sailors more than doubling the fleet from last year’s former SORC. The J/105 fleet was very deep here in Miami this week but the undisputed winner of both the 2005 Florida Grand Prix trophy and class honors was “Masquerade” owned by Thomas Coates of San Francisco, CA who had four bullets over three days.
“It was a tough sailing week and it was light and shifty,” Coates said. “Our great results may indicate that we led a lot but we fought hard to stay there. The competition here is fabulous and it just happened to be our week.”

The opening Sailing World/Land's End NOOD Regatta was held in St. Pete. sunshine and wind was highly abundant, but most notable aside from the tight racing was the incredible service and prestigious venue of the St. Pete Yacht Club. The fleet was mixed with locals and recent KWRW participants, including 10 deep draft and 6 shoal draft (who finished right next to each other in most races! Those winning their divisions played the current and 20-30 degree wind shifts heavily. The St. Pete NOODS definitely demands strong consideration for the Southern Circuit in 2006. -- Jim Doane, Jr.
