This year, this page will be used mainly for "National" stature regattas, e.g. regattas that might draw boats from outside the local fleets. This would include, for example, Key West RW, SORC, Charleston RW, the NOOD regattas, SF Big Boats, et al. I'll gladly consider exceptions of note however.

Fleet 22, Lake Erie, just completed their final weekend of their 2002 J105 Series. The series consisted of 4 weekends throughout the summer ending in 10 races. Skip Malm and Colin Mills led Wish to win the series uncontested. However, it came down to the last race to decide 2nd and 3rd , and also 4th and 5th. Rob & Clay Mock on Unbridled just got past Jim Ellis on Highlander on the last leg to secure 2nd overall, so Highlander takes 3rd . Kirk Groenendaal on Air Rocket preserved 4th place when Todd Amsdell with Chris Bartel and Tom Purdy on Patriot, after leading all boats the first 2 legs of the last race, relinquished the lead and dropped back a few places by the finish. (see results).

Lake Fest is an annual event on Lake Texoma (border of Texas and Oklahoma), one of the largest lakes in the US. Every year almost 100 boats, some from as far as California and Florida come for the three-day event to raise money for the Kids in the Denison and Sherman Texas area. This year we had 92 boats and raised over $115,000 for the Kids

For the last two years Bob Sittel (owner of Sittel Marine, South West J/Boat distributor), has sponsored the "J105 Texas Shoot Out" during LakeFest. This year we had 6 boats and were able to sail one design. It was the first time Ground Zero and Amazing Grace sailed their J105’s in a one-design race.

We were unable to sail Friday because of storms and lightning. The weather Saturday morning wasn’t much better but we were able to get one race in late afternoon with wind gusting to 30+ knots. By the end of the race we were below 10 knots steady. Sunday started out with no wind and heavy fog. When the first race started we had 3 to 4 knots of wind and as we entered the second race the wind was light with erratic shifts.

In the first race Saturday three boats, Ground Zero, The New Boat and Amazing Grace were over early. Amazing Grace was lined up with the committee boat and the far gate when she realized the gate was not the pin, a big OOPs. The crew came close to making the skipper walk the plank over that one. They were happy to report the skipper helmed the boat to their satisfaction for the next two races. Big Dog, the reigning champion from last year, sailed a great race. While Trickster, also sailing a great race let Amazing Grace get away on Sunday. The second tiebreaker went to Amazing Grace who scored higher in the last race.

The New Boat never did recover from the over early in the first race but did wreak havoc with Amazing Grace on Sunday’s last race. Adios, was in the hunt Saturday but the light winds took their toll on Sunday. Ground Zero had trouble getting off the ground but sailed consistently all weekend.
